Canada Housing Starts Held Nearly Flat
Canada’s six-mo starts trend was nearly flat in Mid-Q2 2026, ↑~0.5% to ~258K units on a seasonally adjusted annual basis across Canada.
Actual starts in larger centres ↓~5% yearly to ~22.6K units, while total national SAAR ↓~6% MoM to ~261.4K units in Mid-Q2 2026.
Year-to-date starts reached ~93.6K units, ↑~3% yearly, as British Columbia and Ontario gains outweighed Prairie-region decreases within Canada’s national total so far.
Construction indicators improved: units under construction in larger centres ↑~1% MoM to ~374.7K, and completions ↑~11% from Early-Q2 to ~16.9K in Mid-Q2 2026.
Approved-but-unstarted units ↓~2% MoM to ~138.8K, signaling brokers and buyers should watch supply timing as price pressure tends to persist across Canada.
